Welcome to the EPTI project

EPTI (Everyday Practices of Trans-Individuality) is a creative research project based at Durham University. It explores the joys and challenges of everyday life during the Covid-19 pandemic, as experienced by trans people. This includes anyone who is transgender, transexual, non-binary, non-conforming, intersex, questioning, exploring, or somewhere under the ‘trans umbrella'. The project was developed by Dr Sage Brice. Sage’s own trans experiences inform her work as an artist, geographer, and activist.

At its root, the project starts from this idea: trans people and their lives often become a battleground for wider social conflicts about the meaning and definition of sex and gender. Thinking about gender and identity as collective possibilities rather than individual characteristics might offer a way out of this problem.

The research project takes everyday activities and experiences of trans life as a way of exploring this idea. We believe the details of how we do gender may shed light on bigger questions about the nature of identity.
